Function

Azithromycin's mechanism of action is similar to erythromycin. It plays an antibacterial role by binding to the 50S subunit of the ribosomes of sensitive bacteria, which inhibits RNA dependent protein synthesis and retains the antibacterial profile of typical erythromycin. The activity against chlamydia was similar to erythromycin. Compared with erythromycin, the antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria was significantly improved. The antibacterial activity against influenza bacillus and Neisseria gonorrhoeae was more than 4 times stronger than erythromycin, the antibacterial activity against Legionella was about 2 times stronger than erythromycin, and the antibacterial activity against enterobacteriaceae was also significantly stronger than erythromycin. MIC for most gram-negative bacteria is less than 1μg/ml. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes were cross-resistant to erythromycin. It also has good killing effect on toxoplasmosis and Treponema pallidum. Azithromycin is mainly used for respiratory tract infection, urogenital tract infection, skin soft tissue infection and sexually transmitted diseases caused by sensitive microorganisms.

It is used for acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, and acute attacks of sinusitis, acute otitis media, acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis caused by sensitive bacteria.

It is used for pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, influenza bacillus and mycoplasma pneumoniae.

For chlamydia and non-multi-drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae caused urethritis, cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease, non-multi-drug-resistant gonorrhoeae caused by simple genital infection (need to exclude the co-infection of spirochaetes melnospira).
